Mood

2020

This young French singer with a powerful and lyrical voice has trained with the avant-garde artist Meredith Monk, and this has had a profound effect on her work. As an artist in residence at Les Dominicains, she prepared and presented an usual project. In her performance under the geodesic dome, in a bespoke audio-visual setting, she accompanied herself on an Indian harmonium.

Coming from a family of musicians, Mood (Maude Trutet) grew up surrounded by jazz musicians from Nantes and Paris who recorded in her parents’ studio. A singer since the age of 14, she spent her teenage years on stage, writing and singing with the experimental rock group L’Effe Défée. Following formal training in voice, contemporary music and musicology, she has also worked in opera, vocal improvisation, northern Indian classical song and traditional Arab-Andalusian song. With the Kreiz Breizh Akademi, she was part of the Lieskan ensemble and a specialist in the modal music of the classical and popular traditions. In 2013, Mood made her first journey to India, where she received instruction from the Gundecha brothers at the Dhrupad Institute in Bhopal. The musical material she gathered afterwards in Benarès formed the basis of her first album, Doom, which was released in 2014.

Mood then underwent training with the New York avant-garde artist Meredith Monk, who nicknamed her ‘my granddaughter’. In 2016 Mood was noticed by the television programme The Voice on TF1, which enabled her to work with Zazie.
