2021

Aleksejs Naumovs, a former rector of the Art Academy of Latvia, is a leading exponent of one of the most dynamic fields in contemporary Baltic painting, which follows in the great tradition of landscape painting. The latter was particularly popular at the start of the 20th century, through the celebrated Baltic symbolism of Purvitis, Valters and Ciurlionis, and in 2018 was showcased at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, in the exhibition ‘Âme sauvage: le symbolisme dans les pays baltes’. A superb colourist, Aleksejs Naumovs has, like many Nordic painters, a feeling for light which allows him to capture the moment and to complete paintings very quickly, working outdoors. He has already taken part in several artistic residences in various countries.

His two-week creative residency at the Chateau de l’Esparrou was planned for September 2020, during the grape harvest, in order that he could paint the various iconic landscapes of Canet-en-Roussilon – the manor and its park, the vines and vineyard buildings, and the lakes.

Residency postponed to 2021.
