Masterclass in the Arts florissants : ‘From Lully to Rameau: the art of recitative in French opera from the Grand Siècle to the Age of Enlightenment’

The Les Arts Florissants Foundation – William Christie is organising a masterclass entitled “From Lully to Rameau: the art of recitative in French opera from the Grand Siècle to the Age of Enlightenment”, which will be led by tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen in October 2025.

One of the most prominent Belgian tenors on the Baroque scene, Reinoud Van Mechelen has established himself as one of the great interpreters of the French repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Through three days of masterclasses with young professionals, the artist will explore the declamation, style and ornamentation specific to lyric tragedy. This masterclass will also be a rare opportunity to delve into the heart of French recitative, between rhetorical rigour and theatrical expressiveness, guided by an artist who is both a singer and a teacher, renowned for his musical sensitivity and profound understanding of this repertoire.
