Moneim Rahama

The Sudanese poet, writer and journalist Moneim Rahama was artist in residence at the Saline Royal.

A journalist in Sudan, where he co-founded the opposition daily newspaper Ajras al-Hurriya (‘Bells of Freedom’), he was one of many arrested during the mass arrests in Khartoum in 2011. Imprisoned and sentenced to death, he was later released thanks to an international campaign of support. He left Khartoum in March 2013 with his wife and four children, living first in Ethiopia and moving to France in 2015.

He now lives in exile in Marseille, and received the PEN Award for Freedom of Expression in 2015. During his residency at the Saline Royale, Moneim Rahama worked on his poems and on a novel.
