Amit Chatterjee/

Musician

Amit Chatterjee is a highly gifted Tabla player of India. The famous internationally reputed Tabla Maestro, Pandit Sankha Chatterjee being the uncle and Guru of Amit; found extraordinary talent and tremendous eagerness in little Amit to touch and play the Tabla.

He adopted Amit as his son and started imparting rigorous training from the tender age of five in typical Indian Style of Guru Shishya Parampara. Amit is one of those rare tabla players who have been fortunate enough to acquire the intricacies and subtleties of both Farukhabad and Punjab Gharana. Rich musical heritage of his family provided Amit with the rare opportunity to come in close contact with and receive blessings from great stalwarts of Indian Music like Late Ustad Allarakha Khan, Late Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri, Late Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, Late Pandit V.G.Jog, Late Pandit Kishen Maharaj, and also living legends such as Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Ashish Khan.

Residence project:

They both want to explore and go beyond their musical creativity.

“Nowadays it’s important for us to be connected with other cultures as we are earth’s citizens. We want to share our heritage of musical traditions and associate them to new kind of thinking and music. We are looking for a place where we can experiment music with special installation and sound design. As well as mixing our universe with electronics and musical effects. We are interested to combine our creation with other kinds of arts (video mapping, dancer…) or artists. We have worked with Oriental music and European music, especially with French musicians and German musicians, we can offer and make bridges of both type of music with our music, collaboration of both style of music will create unique world music. We believe music comes from your heart, and our music is not written and fix, we improvise on the basic of raga (ascending and descending notes) which is covered with rhythmic cycle called taal frame. This is a reason why we can collaborate with any kind of music.

We are looking to meet audience to present our unique creation as well as our traditional repertoire. We do love to present our universe to kids as well as sharing the spiritual side of our music.”
