An artists' residence, multidisciplinary art center, and 7-hectare heritage site, the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici welcomes nearly 70 artists, authors, and researchers each year for stays of varying lengths, including 16 residents for a year-long residency.
Until October 15, 2025, the French Academy in Rome is holding a competition to select 16 residents who will be welcomed for 12 months at the Villa Medici in Rome starting in September 2026 for a creative, experimental, or research residency.
The competition is open to established artists, authors, and researchers. The competition has no nationality requirements but does require proficiency in French. Applications are accepted in all artistic disciplines, including, for example, musical and literary creation, architecture and design, plastic and visual arts, choreography, directing, art history and theory, and restoration of works of art.
At the end of the competition (pre-selection based on application, followed by an audition), sixteen candidates will be selected for a residency at the Villa Medici from September 2026 to August 2027.

- Application deadline: October 15, 2025, at 12 p.m. (noon, French mainland time)
- Announcement of eligible applications: week of January 19, 2026 (indicative date)
- Audition by the jury in Paris: February 5 and 6, 2026 (indicative dates)
- Start of residency in Rome: August 31, 2026
