Partners / CALL FOR APPLICATIONS SAMBOUK 2024

The Sambouk project is a partnership between the Fanak Fund, the City of Martigues, and the Association for the Animation of Social Centers in Martigues.

Its objective is to host four artists each year (two women and two men) from Arab countries (League of Arab States members) or the Middle East (Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan), regardless of their place of residence, for a creative residency, sharing, and transmission in Martigues, under the conditions described below and subject to a contract.

Following the experimentation of the first three years, the partners have decided to extend this cultural and artistic adventure.

SESSION DETAILS

The residencies are organized in two sessions of four weeks each, partly aligned with school holidays: from July 6 to August 7, 2024 (holidays starting from July 6) and from October 5 to November 3, 2024 (holidays from October 19 to November 3).

One session will be for male artists, and the other for female artists, to ensure gender parity.

The first week of the residency will be dedicated to exploring Martigues and its surroundings, as well as meeting with local artists, actors, and professionals. Artists can express the types of personalities or professionals they would like to meet during their stay to enrich their artistic project or professional network.

The remainder of the stay can be used for the artist's personal work and organizing mediation activities with residents.

Upon agreement, the Fanak Fund will cover their international transportation expenses (refundable airfare with checked baggage included), local transportation to and from airports, visa fees, mandatory travel insurance, and, if necessary, mandatory vaccination expenses.

The selected artists will be accommodated in the municipal apartment at the Picasso site, equipped with Wi-Fi, three bedrooms with two single beds, and shared spaces (kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom, and laundry with a washing machine).

The selected artists will be remunerated under a French employment contract.

Upon arrival, they will receive a subsistence allowance of €700 to cover their meal expenses, making the artists entirely self-sufficient.

Local public transportation passes will be provided to them.

Depending on the availability of its vehicle fleet, the City of Martigues will provide one electric bike per artist.

ARTISTS' PROJECT

The artist's personal artistic project should be the foundation of their application, including a detailed and explicit presentation.

All artistic disciplines are eligible, provided that their approach is understandable and assimilable by residents of all ages and that their practice does not require tools and materials exceeding the financial capacities of the partnership.

Disciplines with a partially or fully digital approach will be preferred.

The residencies aim to present the artist's work and engage with residents through mediation activities for children, families, and/or adults. The form of these activities will be chosen by the artist based on their artistic project.

The artist must propose a time for the presentation of their mediation actions (workshops or others) according to the rhythm most suitable for their project. In this regard, a signed agreement concerning the public exploitation rights of these specific works must be finalized between the artists and the partners.

The selection of artists will be made by a selection committee consisting of representatives from the partnership.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS: TO BE SUBMITTED BY FEBRUARY 15, 2024

Form to be completed: https://forms.gle/ycGyDMjNCBPaEwqU9

Please note: Any application that does not meet the following expectations will not be considered:

The artist commits to being available during both defined periods.

The artist will indicate which cultural structure(s) they wish to work with during their residency, as well as the reasons guiding their choice. This choice can be discussed with the partners during a working session if multiple artists choose the same structure.

Provisional schedule of the residency (personal work time, mediation activities, workshops, meetings, etc.); for selected candidates, this schedule will be the subject of specific work to adapt it to the imperatives and needs of the partners.

The artist will explain the type of mediation action envisaged, the ages concerned, and the number of possible participants.

A detailed inventory of the materials required for their artistic residency and transmission workshops must be attached to the application. If the application is accepted, these supplies will also be covered by the partnership.

The candidates will solemnly declare that this comprehensive support will not be exploited for purposes other than those stipulated in the contract, especially in the context of possible participation in other employment contracts.

CITY OF MARTIGUES

Martigues is a city in the south of France, with approximately 50,000 inhabitants, located between Marseille (45 minutes away) and Arles (35 minutes away), between the Etang de Berre and the Mediterranean. It has the particularity of having a territory where remarkable natural spaces (Etang de Berre, Côte Bleue, agricultural plains) coexist with industrial sites, particularly petrochemicals.

In 2019, the city of Martigues created a space for popular and festive expression, based on the founding values of its policy: Worldliness, Hospitality, Equality, Biodiversity, Freedom, and Peace: the "Fadas du Monde," a way to engage in innovative eco-responsible initiatives and experiment with new ways of occupying public spaces.

This event unfolds throughout the year with a peak in the summer, hosting cultural interventions that combine artistic performances and societal reflections: concerts, thematic meetings, street performances, circus arts, visual arts, dance, theater, storytelling, etc. No discipline, no art is neglected; the Fadas du Monde is also the freedom of creation that extends beyond a specific domain and promotes the transversality of cultures.
