The process

Currently, the designation process differs depending on whether the site/project is based in France (where the label is recognised by the Ministry of Culture) or outside France where it is awarded, after evaluation, through a process of co-optation. If you are considering applying for designation as a Centre culturel de rencontre, one of your first steps should be to contact the Association des Centres culturels de rencontre to obtain detailed information. In the meantime, here is a brief summary…

Is your site located in France?

The first step towards designation in this case is the consideration of the project by the National Commission of Centre culturel de rencontre. Each applicant prepares a summary report and takes steps to link its activities with as many partners as possible, whether this be through steering committees, meetings or otherwise.

The final report, along with letters of support for the project, are then sent by the project manager to the following: DRAC (Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles), who will forward it with a covering letter from the regional préfet to the general secretariat of the National Commission of Centres culturel de rencontre; and to the president of the Association des Centres culturels de rencontre.

A presentation of the project is made in front of the National Commission of Centres culturel de rencontre, which alone can propose to the Minister the centres which may be taken in to consideration or designated.

Is your site elsewhere in Europe or the rest of the world?

The first step in becoming part of the European network of cultural centres in historic monuments is to contact a member of the Orientation Council or the ACCR. Each applicant then prepares a summary report on the project, the site, the perspectives. At the same time, contact is made with members of the network in order to establish support for its application.

The project is submitted for evaluation and discussion to the Orientation Council, which makes a decision on the application. It is then presented at the Plenary Meeting of the network.
